Preparing to Deploy the SD-Branch Network

This section of the guide will detail how to configure Central to prepare for an SD-Branch deployment. The four requirements include importing devices, licensing devices, creating groups, and creating site configuration. This section will also cover the fundamental differences between group and device configuration levels.

Importing devices

Aruba automatically adds newly purchased devices to Central. However, there is also the option of manually adding a device by using its MAC address and serial number. This procedure will cover manually adding devices to Central.

Assign Subscriptions to the Devices

Once the subscription key has been added to Central, licenses must be applied to each device. Enable automatic license assignment with the,自动订阅选项。Manual subscription application is possible, however Aruba does not recommend manually assigning licenses as it creates extra administrative overhead. Follow the below steps to enable automatic licensing.

定义设备组

A device’s final configuration is a combination of the group configuration along with the device-specific configuration. When creating groups for devices, they should have similar network functions so that common configuration such as VLAN’s, NTP, and DNS will be applied from the group level. Device-specific configurations, like IP addresses, should be applied at the device level. Within Central, there are two group types, template groups and UI groups. Template groups are CLI based configuration files pushed down to a device. Device specific information is defined using variables. With UI groups, all configuration is done via the Central user interface. Device specific configuration can be applied by selecting a particular device and configuring through the user interface.
Template groups are an excellent choice for when devices have a lot of overlapping configuration and when that configuration will not change often. UI groups are a great choice for a workflow driven approach to configuration as well as the flexibility to change single device configurations. In both cases, devices in the same group need to have like configuration. If there is a situation where port layouts have to change or the topology of the branch differs from other sites, its recommended to create a new group and configuration for that different site.
